Do you know why antioxidants are important? They neutralize and fight free radical damage in our bodies. Free radicals are evil and destructive and come to us in all sorts of ways. We get them by having increased stress in our lives, through smoking, and through eating things like meat and drinking alcohol. We can limit our exposure to free radicals by being more aware, and we can fight them by learning to eat more foods high in antioxidants.
Do you know why your mother always said, Eat your vegetables? Do you think she knew what zeazanthin and lycopene were? How about anthocyanin? That\’s doubtful. These are the cartenoids present in the dark pigment of vegetables and fruits such as yellow corn, tomatoes and blue or blackberries.
We have enough free radical damage just living on the earth. Some causes are: too much sun exposure, exericise, stress, eating meat, alcohol and one of the worse – smoking. We can certainly pay attention to all of these, and we can also go one step further and start increasing our intake of antioxidants.
There are several foods that have high antioxidant properties. Dr. Oz (a well known cardiologist) did a show on \”Cancer Fighting Antioxidants\” where he talked about five of the top foods to eat containing the highest levels of antioxidants. The list went like this, from high to low: red beans, bluebetties cranberries, pecans and broccoli. Surprised about the red beans? These are excellent colorful fruits and vegetables to eat and they are easy to find. Dr. Oz used a technology on the show to measure the score of the studio audience. It was called a BioPhotonic Scanner and the results were quite shocking. Dr. Oz had the highest score of all. Why? He eats all these colorful foods and more.
We may actually prevent such illnesses as Alheizmers with a diet high in antioxidants. Many foods actually trigger antioxidant production. Some of these are: broccoli, tumeric, green tea and red wine. The earth provides what we need. One of the oldest and wisest quotes of all time, spoken by Hippocrates, goes like this: Let thy food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food. We all have a natural healing force within us and we need to listen to that force.
