When we are feeling stressed, angry, upset or depressed we often reach for unhealthy food to comfort us. Unfortunately, this habit actually increases our stress and can cause healthy problems and a lack of self-esteem. To avoid this mistake, there are some simple tips below.
Don’t skip the most important meal of the day. Breakfast is very important because it is your bodies first intake of fuel that will charge it for the day ahead. Make sure that your breakfast is healthy to keep your blood sugar from rising and falling too drastically during the day.
Eat a protein-rich snack such as a granola bar, energy bar, or trail mix in-between meals to keep your blood sugar steady. When you fail to consume enough protein throughout the day, your blood sugar levels crash, which results in fatigue, mental fog and mood swings.
If you are like most Americans, you eat when you are feeling stressed. This is a normal reaction in our culture but can be very unhealthy. To keep this self-destructive behavior acceptable, substitute the potato chip, chocolate and cookies with carrot sticks, celery sticks, sunflower seeds or a mango. Pack your lunch at home. While this was the tradition for hundreds of years, recently people have been visiting the fast food window during their lunch break. While this food does taste good, it is very unhealthy and the cost adds up quickly. Take the time to prepare yourself a healthy and filling meal the night before work and pack it along with you. Include veggies, fruit, a granola bar, protein, carbohydrates and water. Your sense of accomplishment will increase as you eat healthier and save money each day.
